The global rice agriculture towards 2050: An inter-continental perspective

Abstract: The growth in rice consumption has either slowed down or become negative in all the continents although additional per capita demand for rice exists in Africa. The future additional rice demand will mainly come from the population growth in Africa and Asia. The production growth during the past led by growth in yield has helped in meeting rice demand around the globe. However, Africa continues to lag far behind other continents in achieving the desired level of yield. Additional research efforts are needed in … Show more

“…The global population is expected to increase to 9 billion by 2050. Therefore, rice breeders need to develop new and improved cultivars of rice that have higher yields and adaptation to different biogeographic regions [ 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 ]. CWRs of rice can provide genetic resources for these important traits as they are adapted to wide geographic ranges and are tolerant to many biotic and abiotic stresses [ 63 , 67 , 68 ].…”

“…The aim of these efforts is to increase farmer income, secure food supply, and preserve the natural environment. Therefore, the adoption of new practices in rice cultivation contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, and in particular goal 1 no poverty, and 2 zero hunger (Ehiakpor et al, 2021; Samal et al, 2022). In addition, this crop contributes to sustainable production systems (Samal et al, 2022), in line with SDG 12, and even water efficiency, SDG 6, when management practices decouple production from the degradation of the natural environment (Ali et al, 2018).…”

“…Rice is a key food crop that is produced in many countries around the world and feeds a large part of the world’s population ( IRRI, 2006 ; Kaur and Pati, 2017 ). This crop is important for global food security since it is consumed by most of the world’s poor people ( Samal and Babu, 2018 ; Kandil et al., 2022 ). Rice demand is expected to increase with population growth by 2050 and reach values of 607 million tons based on current consumption ( Samal and Babu, 2018 ; Gérardeaux et al., 2021 ).…”

Local rice cultivation has a great economic value due to its high consumption and large extensions throughout the Colombian territory ( Garcés, 2020 ).…”
