The Glycosyltransferase QUA1 Regulates Chloroplast-Associated Calcium Signaling During Salt and Drought Stress in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Cytoplasmic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]cyt) elevation induced by various signals is responsible for appropriate downstream responses. Through a genetic screen of Arabidopsis thaliana mutants defective in stress-induced [Ca2+]cyt elevation, the glycosyltransferase QUASIMODO1 (QUA1) was identified as a regulator of [Ca2+]cyt in response to salt stress. Compared with the wild type, the qua1-4 mutant exhibited a dramatically greater increase in [Ca2+]cyt under NaCl treatment. Functional analysis showed that QUA1 is a novel chlor… Show more

“…Drought and salt are two common environmental stresses that plants may encounter (Golldack et al, 2014;Zheng et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2018). The involvement of autophagy in response to drought stress was first elucidated in Arabidopsis, indicated by the upregulation of ATG18a during drought conditions (Liu et al, 2009).…”

“…108 In addition to halophytes, many other plants also exhibit adaptations to protect against salt stress. 109 For example, in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), high NaCl concentrations induce leaf senescence. 110 Nitric oxide (NO) has been found to delay salt-induced leaf senescence in cotton through regulation of SOS1, NHX1, NCED2, NCED9, and IPT1 expression.…”

“…All living things experience adverse conditions at some point during their lifespan. [1][2][3][4][5] Plants and animals are subjected to abiotic and biotic stresses that include salt, [6][7][8][9][10][11] drought, [12][13][14][15] and pathogens. [16][17][18][19][20] Environmental stresses also affect organisms at the cellular level.…”
