The Godin-Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire: Validity Evidence Supporting its Use for Classifying Healthy Adults into Active and Insufficiently Active Categories

Abstract: This study provided validity evidence for the Godin-Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (GSLTPAQ) to classify respondents into active and insufficiently active categories. Members of a fitness center [45 women and 55 men; mean (SD) age=45.5 (10.6) yr.] completed the questionnaire. Using only moderate and strenuous scores, those with a leisure score index≥24 were classified as active; those with a score≤23 were classified as insufficiently active. VO2max, percentage of body fat, and electronic… Show more

“…The cutoff score of 24 for the GLTEQ also accounts for weekly frequency and energy expenditure according to the American College of Sports Medicine physical activity guidelines. 19 These guidelines seemingly correspond with rates of physical activity in MS classified based on accelerometry and have been validated in healthy adults. 11,18,19 …”

“…Its validity and reliability have been demonstrated. 25,26 Total physical activity (minutes per week) was calculated by multiplying the duration and frequency for each activity and by summing these for the different activities.…”

“…The measure previously demonstrated strong correspondence with accelerometer, maximal oxygen uptake (treadmill test), and body fat testing results. [42][43][44] To align scores with governmental recommendations for exercise and health benefits, the instrument's developers suggested classifications of "active" (or of "substantial benefit") for a score ≥ 24, "moderately active" (or of "some benefit") for a score of 14 to 23, and "insufficiently active" (or of "low benefit") for a score < 14. 36 Fruit/vegetable and sweets intake were selected as the nutritional measures because fruit and vegetable consumption has been identified as a proxy for an overall healthy diet, 28,29 and sweets have been considered a calorie-dense, nutrient-poor, and unhealthy food type.…”
