The Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO): prototype performance and prospects for transient science

Abstract: The Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) is an array of wide-field optical telescopes, designed to exploit new discoveries from the next generation of gravitational wave detectors (LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA), study rapidly evolving transients, and exploit multimessenger opportunities arising from neutrino and very high energy gamma-ray triggers. In addition to a rapid response mode, the array will also perform a sensitive, all-sky transient survey with few day cadence. The facility features a novel, m… Show more

“…Fits were performed on , the computing cluster of the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) collaboration (Dyer et al 2020;Gompertz et al 2020;Steeghs et al 2022). The full table of results is shown in Table A1, with some example fits and corner plots in Figures A1 and A2.…”

“…The Gravitational-Wave Optical Transient Observer (Steeghs et al 2021) is a wide-field optical array, designed specifically to rapidly survey large areas of sky in search of the weak kilonovae and afterglows associated with gravitational wave counterparts. The work we present in this paper was conducted during the GOTO prototype stage, using data taken with a single 'node' of telescopes situated at the Roque de los Muchachos observatory on La Palma.…”

“…For now, we concentrate on a calendar year of prototype operations (spanning 01-01-2019 -01-01-2020) -which represents a significant dataset, comprising 44,789 difference images in total. Raw images are reduced with the GOTO pipeline (Steeghs et al 2021). Here we provide a very brief overview of the process for context, and delegate more in-depth discussion to the specific upcoming pipeline papers.…”
