The growth and decline of urban agglomerations in Germany

Abstract: Half the population of Europe's largest economy by population and economic output lives in 30 main urban agglomerations. This paper presents a series of cartogram visualisations of population changes in Germany for these areas that happened in the period 2008-2013. Most of the areas have seen an urban renaissance by regaining growth. After a long period of suburbanisation, growth started returning to city centres. “…Spatial evolution analysis can reflect the dynamic evolution process of the functional structure, urban hierarchy, and the connections formed between cities in urban agglomerations. It is a regional system covering points, lines, networks, and areas [43]. Studying the spatial evolution of urban agglomerations is conducive to clarifying the spatial structure, development context, and trend of urban agglomerations, summarizing existing problems in the development of urban agglomerations, and formulating feasible high-quality development planning [44].…”

“…In the most recent period, the basic features of urban regions are subject of numerous scientific papers (Etherington & Jones, 2016, 2017Hennig, 2018;Lawton, 2018;Rus et al, 2018), since the city for a long time is not the subject of research without an surrounding area that gravitates to it (Andreasen et al, 2017;Yankson et al, 2017). In the last decades, in professional circles dealing with this issue, the focus of interest is shifting from the city to the city-region as the primary unit of analysis (Davoudi, 2008;Parr, 2005Parr, , 2008Nielsen, 2015;Agergaard & Ortenbjerg, 2017;Vasárus et al, 2018;Kristóf, 2018).…”
