“…Similar results showing the positive effect of July temperatures on spruce growth were also seen in subalpine spruce forests of the Western Carpathians (Bednarz et al 1997), in northern expositions of the Elbe valley in the Krkonoše Mts. (Sander et al 1995) and in the Polish Tatras (Feliksik 1972). The positive influence of precipitation in July of the previous year was also found at lower altitudes of the Krušné hory Mts.…”

“…Those years have been observed for numerous altitude coniferous stands in the French Jura and in Switzerland [10,39], in the Vosges Mountains [3,4], in the French and Italian Alps [19,22,43], in Belgium Ardenne [37], in Czech Republic [44] and in Germany [49]. The dry years 1962 and 1976 have been also observed in broadleaved stands in different French areas [7,29,30].…”

“…Currently only the relationship between climatic characteristics and the radial growth of trees has been analysed (such as Sander 1991, Sander et al 1995. The first dendroclimatological reconstruction for this area focussed on the temperature of the summer half-year for the period 1804-1989 on the basis of the chronology of maximal late-wood density of the spruce Picea abies (L.) Karst.…”

“…They are often connected with a combination of influences resulting from extremely dry years (such as 1948, 1956 and 1976) and from air pollution, mainly NO x , SO 2 and ozone (Bert 1993). These non-climatic environmental changes will, at the very least, obscure the climatic signal in treerings and hamper significantly the task of reconstruction (Sander et al 1995). Although longer continuous measurements of such pollutants for the southern Moravian region are not available, important increases in their concentrations are known to have occurred over a large part of the Czech Republic between the 1960s and 1980s (Materna 1989).…”
