Abstract:Macroautophagy (hereafter autophagy) is the process by which cellular components to be degraded are isolated from the cytoplasm by a double membrane (the mature vesicle, called the autophagosome). Its contents are degraded by acid hydrolases after fusion with the lysosome. This lysosomal degradation process is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Dysfunctional autophagy can lead to the accumulation of cytotoxic protein forms that contribute to the onset of age-related diseases. However, autophagy ac… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
