The H2020 VERTIGO project towards tbit/s optical feeder links

Abstract: To concurrently cope with the scarcity of RF frequency bands, the growing capacity demand and the required lower cost of the ground segment, Very High Throughput Satellites systems must rely on new technical solutions. Optical feeder links are considered as a promising alternative to surpass classical RF technology, offering assets inherent to optical technologies (large bandwidth, no frequency regulation, low beam divergence, components availability). Nevertheless the potential of this technology shall not co… Show more

“…Beyond the analysis of the partial reciprocity observed experimentally, one can discuss how can the reciprocity experiment be exploited. The first application would be for calibration purposes, be it for slant path demonstrators as FEEDELIO or VERTIGO [15], or to test equipment intended to be integrated in ground stations for further ground to satellite optical links. In that sense, optimizing the reciprocity can be a method to minimize the NCPAs of the optical bench.…”

“…It is interesting to note that, while the optimal AO system strongly depends on the atmospheric condition, a system capable of correcting up to 15 orders could reach an almost optimal fiber coupling in most nighttime conditions and would have a slightly sub-optimal coupling in daylight for mild to medium turbulence. Since such an AO system is within the reach of the technological development [82], we will consider this scenario as a reference in the remaining analysis.…”

“…Optical powers at 1.55µm are limited by amplifier technology and therefore the highest data rate terrestrial to space links are being designed around wavelength division multiplexing of multiple optical amplifiers. 3 In this paper G&H report their progress in increasing the power of optical communications amplifiers in this wavelength range to 50W. In addition progress in developing high power wavelength division multiplexers for combining these sources is also reported.…”
