The halos of satellite galaxies: the companion of the massive elliptical lens SL2S J08544−0121

Abstract: Strong gravitational lensing by groups or clusters of galaxies provides a powerful technique to measure the dark matter properties of individual lens galaxies. We study in detail the mass distribution of the satellite lens galaxy in the group-scale lens SL2S J08544−0121 by modelling simultaneously the spatially extended surface brightness distribution of the source galaxy and the lens mass distribution using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. In particular, we measure the dark matter halo size of the satellite … Show more

“…However, we also have the constraint that the projected separation is r p , which yields a distribution of r s that goes as r (r/r p ) 2 − 1 −1 (ref. 37). As M sub ∝ r s , this implies the same functional form for the posterior probability of M sub , neglecting the very small uncertainty on b sub ; this posterior inference on M sub is shown in Fig.…”

“…We model the ACS image and time delays with Glee, a software package developed by Suyu & Halkola (2010) based on Suyu et al (2006) and Halkola et al (2008). The ACS image has 160 × 160 surface brightness pixels as constraints.…”

“…We perform the strong lensing analysis in the core of MACS 2129, using the parametric mass modelling software 'Gravitational Lensing Efficient Explorer', developed by S. H. Suyu and A. Halkola (Suyu & Halkola 2010;Suyu et al 2012). We adopt parametric mass profiles to describe the smooth large-scale cluster dark halo (DH) and the cluster members.…”
