The hazardous waste location and routing problem: an application in Marmara Region in Turkey

Abstract: Hazardous waste management involves the collection, transportation, processing, recycling and disposal of industrial and domestic wastes. In this study, a single objective, multi-product mixed integer programming model for hazardous waste facility location and routing problem is developed for the hazardous waste management problem. The aim of the study is to locate hazardous waste treatment, recycling and disposal facilities to the designated candidate locations with the lowest cost and highest profit. With th… Show more

“…In Turkey, many studies have intensively examined municipal solid waste management (Ayvaz-Cavdaroglu et al, 2019; Banar et al, 2009; Coban et al, 2018; Tınmaz and Demir, 2006; Turan et al, 2009; Rızvanoğlu et al, 2019). Furthermore, some researchers studied liquid waste (Gurbuz and Ozkan, 2019), medical waste management (Birpınar et al, 2009), hazardous waste (Utku and Erol, 2020; Yayintas et al, 2007) and food waste (Cakar et al, 2020). In the light of the literature, none of the studies has examined the challenges and difficulties of municipal waste in accordance with the zero waste strategies in Turkey.…”

“…Here, an external player in conflict with the network runner tries to maximize the function. The courses of action for the opponent are defined by constraint (31) and constraint (32) in the outer model. Constraint (31) defines the intervenor's resource limitation, and constraint (32) describes binary decision variables y's, which indicate whether a specific segment is disabled by the opponent.…”

“…There are some studies quantitatively identifying the risk and suggesting mitigating strategies in the networks having potential life and environmental risks. Among those, Yin et al [39], Utku and Soyöz [33], and Utku and Erol [32] propose a hazardous material (hazmat) transportation network design model to decrease the risk in transportation. Zhang et al [40] suggest a model to determine the risk factors of hazmat crashes on a macro level and develop appropriate measures for improving hazmat transportation safety.…”

“…(2020) use the Full Consistency Method for the supplier selection and Ali et al ( 2021) study a complex interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy set (CIVPFS) for the green supplier chain management. To cope with the uncertain demand for a waste recycling supply chain, Giri et al (2020), Utku and Erol (2020), and Samanta and Giri (2021) propose models for recycling, waste management including recycling, and a two-echelon supply chain model for a single vendor and buyer, respectively.…”
