The health‐related quality of life among patients on maintenance haemodialysis: Evaluation using the “EQ‐5D”

Abstract: Purpose We conducted a cross‐sectional investigation of health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) among maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients, and determined important predictive factors of HRQOL in these patients. Methods Psychological factors were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the General Self‐Efficacy Scale (GSES). HRQOL was evaluated with the EQ‐5D. Laboratory data (albumin, haemoglobin and C‐reactive protein) were collected f… Show more

“…Hence, patients are trapped in a vicious cycle (Hedayati et al, 2009). Poor psychological adjustment to the disease can negatively affect health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) (Debnath et al, 2018; Himmelfarb et al, 2020; Schmidt, 2019; Yuan et al, 2019), which is an important marker of health conditions to assess treatment effectiveness, and predict mortality and disease outcomes (Debnath et al, 2018; Dejvorakul et al, 2019). Patients' HRQoL is related to self‐efficacy, physical and psychological well‐being, social functioning, and dialysis‐related burden (e.g., frequency, cost, and complications of dialysis) (Bossola et al, 2019; Dejvorakul et al, 2019; Jeon et al, 2012; Shimizu et al, 2018; Theofilou, 2011; Yuan et al, 2019).…”

“…5D5L. A cross-sectional study conducted in 2007 in western China investigated HRQOL among hemodialysis patients using another version of the EQ-5D (EQ-5D-3 L), which has three levels of response, and showed an insignificant association between the EQ-5D score and the hemoglobin level [ 42 ]. Fatigue, shortness of breath, headache, reduced mental state, and insomnia are nonspecific anemia symptoms resulting from decreased oxygen supply to body tissues and organs [ 43 45 ].…”

“…The content of GSES was shown in Supplementary File 1 . The total score of 10 items divided by 10 is the final score, which ranges from 1 to 4 (Yuan et al, 2019 ). Scores higher indicate greater self‐efficacy.…”
