The Histological Pathology of Diseases of the Skin

Abstract: A VOLUIE of more than twelve hundred closely printed pages dealing only with the histo-pathology of the skin, without any but the most incidental references to clinical appearances or treatment will be a revelation to those who consider half a dozen lectures thrown into a course of medicine all the attention necessary to dermatology. The book appears as the eighth volume of Professor Orth's Textbook of Special Patliological Anatomy.

“…The involvement of P. acnes in acne was first suggested as early as 1896 when Unna isolated the bacterium from an acne lesion (Unna, 1895 ). Even since then, the exact role the organism plays in the initiation and progression of this chronic inflammatory skin condition remains unclear, especially as some inflamed lesions show no evidence of viable bacterial colonization and no correlation exists between bacterial counts and severity of inflammation (Shaheen and Gonzalez, 2011 ).…”

“…In the author's preface, Unna mentioned that “ the first text-book on the histopathology of the skin appeared in 1840, when Gustav Simon published the results of his years of study ” 1 (the correct date is 1848; the preface to this edition is wrong). Unna's preface also complained about how Virchow and Hebra practically had ignored the subject of dermatopathology in their own works (although he admitted that “ Hebra sought to use pathological anatomy─at least in the systematization of disease ”).…”

“…I n 1896, Paul Gerson Unna published "The Histopathology of the Diseases of the Skin." 1 The book, with "more than twelve hundred closely printed pages," 1 appeared as the eighth volume of Professor Orth's Textbook of Special Pathological Anatomy, and it was written with the object of giving "a thorough description of the pathological anatomy of all the dermatoses, so far as our present knowledge extends." 1 Unna's book was not intended so much as a traditional text book but as "a huge collection of monographs on the histo-pathology of every known diseased condition of the skin."…”
