“…The tectonic framework of NW South America is a product of the junction of three tectonic plates, two oceanic (Nazca and Caribbean) and one continental (South American), which creates two subduction zones. Each subduction zone corresponds to either the Caribbean or the Pacific coast of Colombia and decisively determines the geology of each coast (Correa and Pereira, 2019). Both coasts can be considered collisional (Inman and Nordstrom, 1971).…”

“…The Continental Caribbean Coast of Colombia (CCCC) is located at the northwestern corner of South America, a region influenced by the subduction of the Nazca and Caribbean plates under the South American plate (Correa and Morton, 2010). The shoreline is 1700 km long and is characterized by an alternation of mountainous areas with deltaic plains from the three major Colombian rivers (Magdalena, Sinú, and Atrato) (Correa and Pereira, 2019;Restrepo and López, 2008). It has been shaped by the formation of thick accretionary prisms with sediment supplied from the erosion of the northern Andes, judging by the estimated rates of river's sediment load (44 Mt/yr) at the Magdalena River (Duque-Caro, 1984;Restrepo et al, 2015).…”

Interactions between geological processes and historical anthropogenic activities in coastal watersheds have resulted in unstable coastal geomorphology with environmental deterioration in several places (Correa and Pereira, 2019).
