The history of Distaloy

Abstract: The low alloy steel powder Distaloy { , is today widely used in applications demanding high strength and wear resistance. Its basic properties and composition were designed half a century ago in the USA. The advantage lay in the fact that it was a partial prealloy, i.e. the alloying elements -copper, nickel and molybdenum -were bonded in particulate form to the basic iron particles, thus avoiding impairment of the compressibility. By balancing the contents of nickel and copper it was possible to minimize dimen… Show more

“…However, in wrought metallurgy, phosphorus is treated as an impurity because in cast steels, phosphorus exhibits strong segregation during solidification, with the precipitation of Fe 3 P along the grain boundaries, which leads to embrittlement. Because of this, in majority of steels, amount of phosphorus does not exceed 0.05% [Stewart et al (2000); Lindskog and Carlson (1972)]. In view of these disadvantages, the present work is aimed at development of Fe-P binary alloys through powder metallurgical (P/M) route with higher amount of phosphorus than in conventional steels in order to obtain Fe-P alloys in sheet form with a good combination of strength and ductility without the problem of Fe 3 P segregation.…”

“…Distaloy AE alloy used in this study has a diffusion bonding powder structure and on the structure of Distaloy AE alloy, between Fe and dispersed alloying element into Fe-matrix, metallurgical binding structure happens. This situation provides high strengthening to structure [8][9][10].…”

“…Далеко не исчерпаны возможности расширения промышленного применения диффузионно-легированных и гибридных порошков [12]. В 2013 г. на Европейском конгрессе по порошковой металлургии престижную награду получил Пьер Линдског, известный специалист в области производства железных порошков, который сделал доклад по истории получения порошков Distaloy [13]. Несмотря на очевидный характер проблем (нынешних и будущих), П. Линдског не видит причин, сдерживающих дальнейший рост объемов производства и применения «нашего Distaloy» (our Distaloy).…”
