The History of Spanish Neuroscience: Thematic Papers Issue

Abstract: To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Instituto Cajal, we bring this thematic issue to honor Spanish neuroscience. The issue includes several papers written by scientists, most of them being direct descendants of those who lived on the front lines of the dawn of Spanish neuroscience. These pages reflect a summary of the main achievements of this unique group of neuroscientists, all of them belonging to the Cajal School. Finally, this school of scientists became the forerunner of the moder… Show more

“…Indeed, our segue into encountering, and appreciating, the vibrancy of Spanish science and scholarship has been in great part due to his diligence and energy in opening the vault of such a cornucopia for us. His energy, for example, has resulted in a number of Special and Thematic Paper Issues of our journal that highlight Spanish science and Spanish scientists (e.g., examination of damage and disease to peripheral nerves, Trejo, 2018, Laitman & Albertine, 2018; studies, primarily by Spanish neuroscientists, on new research on the cranial nerves, Trejo, 2019a, 2019b, Laitman & Albertine, 2019a, 2019b; and a deep dive into the extraordinary history of Spanish neuroscience, De Carlos, 2020, Laitman & Albertine, 2020).…”

“…This month's Thematic Papers Issue of The Anatomical Record entitled “The History of Spanish Neuroscience” is guest‐edited by Juan de Carlos, noted neurobiologist and Head of the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Neurobiology at the Cajal Institute in Madrid (De Carlos, , this issue). Our own, dynamic Associate Editor, Jose Luis Trejo, also of the Cajal Institute, has recruited and shepherded this issue, which arose from a small symposium at the Institute in 2016 that honored Santiago Ramon y Cajal and the impressive “Spanish School” in neuroscience that he birthed.…”
