The Hoverflies of an Oak Dehesa from Spain, with a New Species and Other Insights into the Taxonomy of theEumerus tricolorGroup (Diptera: Syrphidae)

Abstract: Abstract.-Dehesas are typical Mediterranean habitats for extensive livestock raising. Hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) may act as bioindicators in dehesas, but they are still poorly known in this habitat type. With the purpose of the present study, hoverfly diversity was surveyed in Campanarios de Azaba, a typical oak dehesa in Salamanca province, Spain. A total of 41 species were recorded, including Eumerus azabense sp. nov. This new species was found to belong to the Eumerus tricolor group, both in morphologi… Show more

“…Since 2017, some new species of Eumerus have been described (Chroni et al 2018;Ricarte et al 2018;Grković et al 2019a, b), not including new descriptions of early stages. Only Piwowarczyk and Mielczarek (2018) reported for the first time an interaction between larvae of Eumerus mucidus Bezzi 1921 and the parasitic plant Cistanche armena (K. Koch) M.V.…”

“…Although molecular evidence has proven useful to resolve taxonomic problems in the eristalines e.g. [ 6 , 7 ], current species concepts in Meromacrus are based only on classic morphology of adults and their phylogenetic relationships are unknown. The study of the immature stages of syrphids not only provide an important set of characters on which to build more robust phylogenies [ 8 ] but is also critical to understand the species requirements in different ecosystems.…”

“…The European fauna is fairly well known, although even here new species are regularly found, especially in the Mediterranean. Since 2010 no less than 17 species have been described from southern Europe and the adjacent Middle East (Ricarte et al 2012, 2018; Grković et al 2015, 2017, 2019; Markov et al 2016; Smit et al 2017; Steenis et al 2017; Chroni et al 2018) and many more await description.…”
