The population of Fogo Island, in Cape Verde, shows a peculiar relationship with the living territory, given that the eminence of volcanic risk is a reality they face every day. The 1951 and 1995 eruptions were particularly scarring in this insular geography, leaving in several generations of Cape Verdeans, the mark of a creation‐destruction‐restart cycle, as well as an attitude of symbiosis with nature. This article is intended to present and discuss results from a scientific research paper based on a study conducted on Fogo Island, in Cape Verde, in February 2016, where researchers sought to understand the local population's response to the last volcanic eruption (from November 2014 to February 2015), in a logic of deterritorialization‐reterritorialization, namely in terms of community and territorial resilience. The analysis method was based on direct observation, with record of the views in a field journal, as well as the biographic narratives of all those who were affected, through questionnaires and interviews.

Many volcanic landscapes reflect the essence of volcanism and are particularly attractive to different kinds of visitors, featuring the concept of volcanic geoheritage. The expressiveness of volcanic processes is exacerbated in active volcanoes, which increasingly attracts geotourism, despite the natural hazards associated to such geological environment. This work reports how the 2014–2015 eruption of the Fogo volcano at Cabo Verde (West Africa) affected the geoheritage of the central part of the caldera, classified since 2003 as Natural Park, and which caused the destruction of several villages but enabled the occurrence of new geosites. Chã das Caldeiras is the only inhabited area within the perimeter of the park and the unique case of human settlement inside the crater of an active volcano. Besides agriculture, geotourism is an important economic activity for the local communities, and both were devastated after the eruption. However, after the 2014–2015 crisis and despite the eruption risk the local population decided to return to the affected villages and re-start their former life, including geotourism which has since recorded enormous growth. The volcanic geoheritage has dynamic nature that stand out from the majority of stable geosites, with periodic destruction of geosites and corresponding geotouristic infrastructures, and the emergence of new geosites. But despite the costs of rehabilitating, this type of geoheritage must be seen as an economic asset capable of attracting visitors to travel to destinations subject to the risk of eruptions, therefore contributing to foster the typical community-based tourism of normally inhospitable territories.

Dans les pays dits en développement, l'occurrence de nombreuses éruptions volcaniques récentes soulève la question de la gestion des risques et des catastrophes associés aux phénomènes naturels « extrêmes ». En s'appuyant sur le cas de l'éruption du volcan de Fogo du 23 novembre 2014, à l'origine d'importantes destructions, de l'évacuation et du relogement des populations locales de Chã das Caldeiras, cet article vise à une analyse des rapports de pouvoir au niveau local, articulés à un niveau plus global, et des réponses apportées par les populations et les institutions face aux menaces volcaniques. La remise en cause d'une approche aléa-centrée et top-down en faveur d'une dynamique de résilience sur le long terme mobilisant les savoirs et ressources de tous les acteurs doit permettre de renforcer les capacités de gestion des risques et des crises volcaniques au Cap-Vert. Centrée sur la vulnérabilité socio-économique des populations face au risque volcanique, l'étude porte également sur les vulnérabilités institutionnelles, « champ qui reste à ce jour largement inexploré, alors qu'il est fondamental à la compréhension des situations de crise » (Morin 2012, Leone 2007).
