The Hydrogen Bike: Communicating the Production and Safety of Green Hydrogen

Abstract: As the international community aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, green hydrogen has great potential to replace methane as a clean source of fuel. A novel public engagement activity, The Hydrogen Bike, has been developed to demonstrate the production and use of green hydrogen from water. The aim of the activity is to educate, entertain and inform young people and adults so that they have an opportunity to form an opinion about the use of hydrogen as a fuel. Using a novel two-part data collection syst… Show more

“…Thermoelectric materials directly convert temperature gradients into electrical power and can play an important role in future energy needs [3]. Thermoelectric generators have the potential to be applied in waste heat recovery systems and can also be used to generate "clean fuel" hydrogen by supplying electricity to the water electrolysis units from waste heat [4][5][6][7][8]. Conversion of waste heat into electric power offers alternative energy that can help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.…”

“…68 Beyond the constraints of media-constructed parameters, 219 Beasy et al 163 argue that technical knowledge can support positive perceptions of hydrogen safety to support social acceptance. However, the ability to access or absorb technical information may be constrained by opportunities for directly experiencing hydrogen technologies, 220,221 and may diverge according to a range of socio-structural variables such as education level. 222 Such dynamics give rise to potential divergence regarding safety perceptions, as documented in mixedmethod analyses on hydrogen acceptance.…”

“…The role of communication in the social acceptance of green hydrogen is essential, as it can promote trust in this technology [82]. In this sense, dissemination and education emerge as important aspects to strengthen the communication and acceptance of green hydrogen [70,71,83,84]. They are key tools for promoting best practices in the industry and reducing the potential environmental and social impact that this type of technology can generate in the long term [5,85].…”
