THE HYDROTHERMAL SYNTHESIS OF 1.13 nm TOBERMORITE FROM GRANITE SAWING POWDER WASTE

Abstract: This study presents the peculiarities that occur during the hydrothermal synthesis of 1.13 nm tobermorite from granite sawing powder waste and CaO. The molar ratios of the primary mixtures were CaO/SiO 2 = 0.83 and 1.0; a hydrothermal curing temperature of 180 and 200 °C; a duration of 4, 8, 12, 24, 72 h. The instrumental analyses (XRD, STA, SEM, TMA) data showed that this industrial by-product is a suitable material to synthesise of 1.13 nm tobermorite. Traces of the aforementioned mineral together with semi… Show more

“…In recent years, many studies investigated the influence of different types of industrial waste on the synthesis and morphology of 1.1 nm tobermorite [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 ]. Depending on the starting materials used for the synthesis, 1.1 nm tobermorite crystals have crystal habits that range from whiskers or flakes [ 60 ] to laths [ 61 , 62 ], grass-like [ 10 ], tabular [ 58 ], fibers [ 63 ], plates [ 64 ], or needles [ 57 ]. The microstructure of the ACC with waste was denser than that of the reference sample.…”

“…23−29 Tobermorite synthesis has also been studied with additives like NaOH and Al 2 O 3 . 23,[25][26][27][28]30,31 NaOH has been shown to hinder the crystallization of tobermorite during synthesis by stabilizing the CSH gel formed. 28,32 Here crystallinity refers to the diffraction intensity observed, indicative of the ordering that the system has undergone.…”

“…At the same time, the water molecules invading the silicate chain are also affected by the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the silicate surface [4,5]. Smalkys G et al [6] synthesised C-S-H through experiments and found that there were two peaks, indicating that the C-S-H was composed of two phases: C-S-H (I) and C-S-H (II). Hou et al [7] simulated the migration of water molecules between the layers of the C-S-H by the molecular dynamics method, and studied the molecular structure, dynamic movement and the interaction between the water and the surface of the C-S-H.…”
