“…Some studies suggested that foetal membranes grow actively until mid-pregnancy, laying down new collagen. In the last half of pregnancy, research suggests that the membrane no longer grows but stretches to accommodate foetal growth [27]. Other investigators have reported a progressive decrease in amniotic concentrations of collagen towards term.…”

“…Skinner et al (1981) report a significantly lower collagen content in the amnion from PROM membranes compared to membranes ruptured at term. In contrast, MacDermott and Landon (2000) found that there is no generalized reduction of the collagen content in the amnion and hypothesizes that PROM is caused by a localized membrane weakness. Apart from that, both studies report a decrease of the collagen content, in the amnion layer, with progressing gestational age.…”

“…The amniotic fluid pressure of women presenting hydramnios has been found to be ,40% higher than that of healthy patients [35]. 8 One large study [36] amid other contradictory results [37][38][39][40][41][42] tends to confirm this hypothesis.…”

“…Several earlier studies [14,38,39,41,42] evaluated the collagen content of amnion (A), chorion (C), and/or chorioamnion (CA), from the tissue hydroxyproline content. Results in the literature and results obtained in this study are shown in Table 3.3.…”
