The HOX complex neighbored by the EVX gene, as well as two other homeobox‐containing genes, the GBX‐class and the EN‐class, are located on the same chromosomes 2 and 7 in humans

Abstract: The HOX complex neighbored by the EVX gene, as well as two other homeobox-containing genes, the GBX-class and the EN-class, are located on the same chromosomes 2 and 7 in humans Received 5 October 1993Two newly identified human homeobox-containing genes, GBXI and GBX2, are closely related genes, as are members of the other homeobox genes, EN-I and EN-2. GBXI and EN-2 have been mapped to chromosome 7q36. The present study shows that GBX2 was mapped to chromosome 2q37. EN-I was mapped to chromosome 2q14. Moreove… Show more

“…IGFBP genes lie in close proximity to homeobox gene clusters Hox A through Hox D which produce DNA-binding proteins that may have coevolved with IGFBPs. Some investigators speculate that Hox and IGFBP genes originated from common ancestral genes which repeatedly underwent coordinated duplications and translocations [20, 21, 22]. …”

“…Gbx-1 and Gbx-2 localise to murine chromosomes 5 [5] and 1C5-E1 [6], and are linked genetically to the two murine members of the Engrailed homeodomain class En-2 and En-1, respectively [5]. This linked arrangement is also seen with the human homologues of these genes [7,8]. This has been interpreted as evidence for evolution of a homeobox gene cluster by locus duplication [8].…”

“…This linked arrangement is also seen with the human homologues of these genes [7,8]. This has been interpreted as evidence for evolution of a homeobox gene cluster by locus duplication [8]. Members of the GBX and EN classes are specifically expressed in the developing nervous system of the mouse and in the case of En-1 and En-2 have been shown to be important for normal brain development [9].…”

“…Four of them (NvHox A4, NvHox B1, NvHox 7 and NvHox X) were cloned via PCR from the newt eye . NvHox 7 was designated as such when cloned due to its homology with the chicken CHox 7 (Fainsod and Gruenbaum, 1989), but in other species, such as Xenopus, mouse or human, its homolog is called Gbx-2 (Matsui et al, 1993). Nvmsx-1 was provided to us by Dr H.-G. Simon and the Xbr1 (cloned from Xenopus) was a gift from Dr N. Papalopoulou.…”
