The aim of this paper is to propose a novel reading of the critical legitimacy of the regulative use of reason in the Transcendental Dialectic of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. After introducing some key terminology of the Dialectic, I analyse the shortcomings of two influential accounts of the regulative use of reason and identify their common problem in their commitment to the descriptivity of the ideas of reason. I then offer my rule‐based account of the regulative use of reason by clarifying how Kant transforms reason's metaphysical inclinations into prescriptive rules of bottom‐up empirical research. Finally, I explain why such interpretation of reason is metaphysically innocent and thereby a promising approach to understand its role in Kant's scientific project.

Artikel ini membahas konsep metafisika keterbatasan sebagai basis bagi pluralisme perspektif John Hick. Metode kualitatif jenis study literature digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Data diperoleh dari sumber-sumber primer dan sekunder yang relevan dengan topik penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa konsep metafisika keterbatasan memainkan peran penting dalam pemikiran John Hick tentang pluralisme agama. Menurut Hick, keberagaman agama dan keyakinan adalah suatu keniscayaan dalam kondisi keterbatasan manusia dalam mencapai kebenaran yang mutlak. Oleh karena itu, konsep keterbatasan ini menjadi dasar bagi pandangan pluralis Hick. Hick berpendapat bahwa setiap agama memiliki akses terbatas dalam memahami kebenaran mutlak, dan pandangan pluralis mengakui bahwa masing-masing agama memiliki kebenaran dan nilai yang berbeda-beda. Namun, pandangan ini juga menunjukkan bahwa kebenaran mutlak dapat dipahami secara lebih utuh melalui dialog dan pengalaman antaragama. Dalam konteks ini, Hick mengembangkan teori relativitas agama dan mengusulkan bahwa keberagaman agama tidak bertentangan dengan kebenaran mutlak. Sebaliknya, keberagaman agama dapat menjadi jalan menuju pengalaman kebenaran yang lebih dalam dan universal. Kesimpulannya, jurnal ini menyajikan pandangan Hick tentang pluralisme agama berdasarkan konsep metafisika keterbatasan. Studi literature yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa keberagaman agama dan keyakinan dapat dipahami dan dihargai secara lebih baik melalui dialog dan pengalaman antaragama, yang merupakan jalan menuju pemahaman yang lebih utuh tentang kebenaran mutlak.

Kant's regulative essentialism and the unknowability of real essences

In his lectures on Logic and Metaphysics Kant distinguishes between logical and real essences. While the former are related to concepts and are knowable, the latter are related to things and are unknowable. In this paper, I argue that the unknowability is explained by the modal characteristic of real essences as a necessitating ground of which a priori knowledge is impossible.I also show how this claim is related to the unknowable necessity of particular laws of nature.Since laws of nature are conceived as grounded in real essences, the unknowability of the latter is equivalent to Kant's other claim that there can be no knowledge of the necessity of particular laws of nature. Necessity can only be known a priori, and therefore, the necessity of particular laws is only assumed and conceived as grounded in something unknowable, a real essence. This conclusion will allow me to attribute to Kant a position I label as 'regulative essentialism', meaning that real essences have an indispensable role of in accordance with the rational interest to explain nature as a system of laws and natural kinds, combined with an epistemic humility about the correspondence of our empirical concepts to real essences.
