The Identification of Carbonyl Compounds by Use of 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine

Abstract: In connection with another investigation under way in this Laboratory, use of the common reagents for a carbonyl group failed to give a solid derivative. At about the same time it was noted that there was no reliable rapid reagent for preparing solid derivatives of most of the aliphatic aldehydes and ketones. As a rule the reagents that form crystalline products with aromatic carbonyl compounds give oils with most of the corresponding aliphatic substances; in spite of this, Laboratory manuals in illustrating

“…Thus, 1000 mL of the reaction chamber gas mixture was sampled in parallel using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) Waters cartridges in order to perform carbonyl derivatization [21]. Those cartridges were eluted and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC/UV).…”

“…The solubility of PFPH was not an issue in those studies because its concentrations were kept below the saturation point. In comparison, Allen (1930) used hot water, hydrazine sulfate, and potassium acetate to prepare 2,4-DNPH solution for the identification of carbonyls. Pang et al (2011) adopted a solvent-free method to form the CC hydrazones on the PFPH coated sorbent from which the hydrazones were extracted subsequently using hexane.…”
