The identification of sub-centres in two Italian metropolitan areas: A functional approach

Abstract: This work introduces a method aimed at the identification of metropolitan sub-centres. Instead of using traditional and static methodologies based on morphological approaches (e.g. employment density), interaction measures have been employed, based on the Central Place theoretical tradition. In particular, tools of social network analysis and a measure of productive completeness have been utilised, so as to take into account the capacity of sub-centres to organise their surrounding territory. The degree of nod… Show more

“…Liu & Wang [26] explored polycentric urban development in 318 cities of China using detailed gridded population data, through a method of adopting the polycentricity indicator based on social network theory. Many indicators of centrality like the in-degree and the out-degree indicators can be borrowed from the network analysis in order to quantify how each node plays a central role in the urban network [27]. However, this method is generally regarding an urban as a node and just considering the intercity flow, but ignoring the individual choices and preferences.…”

“…Many Metropolitan Areas (MAs) are characterized by their polycentric urban spatial structure [2,20,22,23], which is increasingly different from the archetype of the monocentric city [24][25][26]. The urban form not only affects the sustainability and social cohesion of the urban environment, but also plays a role in people's lives [1,22].…”

“…In recent decades, increased attention has been paid to the analysis of polycentric urban development [1,4,20,21]. Many Metropolitan Areas (MAs) are characterized by their polycentric urban spatial structure [2,20,22,23], which is increasingly different from the archetype of the monocentric city [24][25][26].…”
