The Image Data Resource: A Scalable Platform for Biological Image Data Access, Integration, and Dissemination

Abstract: Access to primary research data is vital for the advancement of the scientific enterprise. It facilitates the validation of existing observations and provides the raw materials to build new hypotheses and make new discoveries. In the life sciences, research communities have repeatedly collaborated to build resources that allow for submission, archiving and access to gene sequences, macromolecular structures, and data from functional genomics experiments. Added value databases build on these archives by harmoni… Show more

“…Integrative proteomic analyses of image screens should become increasingly possible in the future thanks to the efforts of public resources such as the Image Data Resource ( Williams et al, 2016 ). Strategies like ours should provide the comparative context to understand the diversity of experiments contained within these databases.…”

“…Recently, sharing of large biological datasets has greatly improved [27]. Further, EBI has made a large investment to develop the IDR (Image Data Resource) [50], a database built on top of open source tools to facilitate the sharing of terabyte sized datasets with complex metadata.…”

“…Firstly, sharing and viewing of the raw image data has not been addressed in CUBIC-Cloud. There are several software and repository sites for sharing and viewing large biological image datasets [54,55,56]. The challenge would be to define an ontology to effectively tag each data so that easy yet flexible search is facilitated.…”
