The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Chess World

Abstract: This paper focuses on key areas in which artificial intelligence has affected the chess world, including cheat detection methods, which are especially necessary recently, as there has been an unexpected rise in the popularity of online chess. Many major chess events that were to take place in 2020 have been canceled, but the global popularity of chess has in fact grown in recent months due to easier conversion of the game from offline to online formats compared with other games. Still, though a game of chess c… Show more

“…Almost until the end of the 20th century, chess was considered the standard of human intelligence, and its algorithms were unattainable for automatic machines. However, in the 21st century, a simple computer is able to play at the strength of a master without any mysticism [18]. Still, a computer cannot create a game like chess, although attempts to develop games with the help of AI are already underway.…”

“…Factor 3: Higher or Lower Stakes Since the AI system Deep Blue won a game of chess against world champion Gary Kasparov in 1997, chess-playing AI has evolved and with software such as Stockfish and Alpha Zero its level of play has surpassed human ability by a large gap (Iliescu, 2020). This is a clear-cut example of AI which is competing (see Factor 1) in that it does exactly what people do, and all of what they do.…”

“…At the same time, its performance surpasses human performance (see Factor 2). However, chess is still thriving, even more than ever, with many people playing the game and popularity remaining high (Iliescu, 2020). This could be seen as evidence that competing AI does not reduce creative agency, but only if we were to neglect this last factor of stakes.…”

“…Modeling and classifying the playing styles of players is a challenging but fascinating problem. It can give many potential applications, such as targeted training and preparations, AIassisted cheating detection [34], [35], even wide-range psychological research [21], [22], [36], [37].…”
