The impact of bacteria-derived ultrafine dust particles on pulmonary diseases

Abstract: The relationship between ambient particulate matter exposure and health has been well established. Ultrafine particles (UFP) with a diameter of 100 nm or less are known to increase pulmonary disease risk. Biological factors in dust containing UFP can cause severe inflammatory reactions. Pulmonary diseases develop primarily as a result of chronic inflammation caused by immune dysfunction. Thus, this review focuses on the adverse pulmonary effects of biological UFP, principally lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and bact… Show more

“…Fuel burning generates chemical compounds with a high oxidative capacity that induce oxidative stress and DNA damage, which are pointed as the main mechanism responsible for the pathogenesis of COPD [147]. Additionally, biological factors, such as allergens, viruses, and bacterial substances, are likely to induce severe inflammatory reactions and cause immune dysfunction and chronic inflammation, which leads to COPD diseases [148][149][150].…”

“…The mechanism of azithromycin seems to be efficacious by strengthening the innate immunity [ 20 ] rather than antiviral efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 [ 38 ]. Serine protease inhibitors [ 39 ] such as camostat mesylate/nafamostat mesylate are limited options as they suppress the facilitation of C3b and C5b [ 40 ].…”

“…In the case of severe/critical pneumonia, anticoagulants have to be applied as a basic treatment regimen [ 40 ] to help avoiding the use of mechanical ventilation or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. It is required to make an adequate choice according to the symptom of the patients among warfarin, heparin [ 44 ], or camostat mesylate/nafamostat mesylate.…”

“…Local and systemic inflammation, especially linked to chronic exposures, is a common hallmark of exposure to airborne NPs and MPs [ 160 , 168 ]. Cytokines secreted at inflammation sites reach BM and alter HSC niches, affecting maturation and differentiation phases of leukocytes and delivery of cells into the bloodstream.…”
