The impact of binary stars on the dust and metal evolution of galaxies

Robert M Yates,
David Hendriks,
Aswin P Vijayan
et al.

Abstract: We present detailed implementations of (a) binary stellar evolution (using binary_c) and (b) dust production and destruction into the cosmological semi-analytic galaxy evolution simulation, L-Galaxies. This new version of L-Galaxies is compared to a version assuming only single stars and to global and spatially-resolved observational data across a range of redshifts (z). We find that binaries have a negligible impact on the stellar masses, gas masses, and star formation rates of galaxies if the total mass ejec… Show more

“…Namely, we look at the DTG, small-to-large (S-to-L), and silicate-to-carbonaceous (Sil-to-C) ratios as a function of stellar mass. These quantities are particularly relevant, as they are strongly dependent on the grain accretion process in galaxies (e.g., Hirashita & Kuo 2011;Aoyama et al 2017;Parente et al 2022;Yates et al 2024). In particular, in our model, the accretion process boosts the DTG ratio, as well as the silicate and small grain abundance (the latter up to a Figure 11.…”

“…libcdict has been used for the last year in the binary_c single-and binary-star population nucleosynthesis framework (Izzard et al, 2004(Izzard et al, , 2006(Izzard et al, , 2009(Izzard et al, , 2018. Recent works (Hendriks & Izzard, 2023b;Izzard & Jermyn, 2023;Mirouh et al, 2023;Yates et al, 2023) compute the evolution of millions of singleand binary-stellar systems in only a few hours using its binary_c-python Python frontend (Hendriks & Izzard, 2023a). We provide libcdict as open-source code on Gitlab subject to the GPL3.…”
