Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a chronic inflammation of the middle-ear cleft and mastoid mucosa, in which the tympanic membrane (TM) is not intact and recurrent ear discharge or otorrhea is present. 1 Condition of ossicles in ears with CSOM is generally a question preoperatively and it is clear only during an operation. Reliable presurgical diagnosis of interruption or immobility in ossicular chain (OC) would permit a better preoperative counselling and better surgical planning. In this study, we compared the preoperative audiometric measures with the intra-operative findings in the ears with CSOM to identify value of preoperative audiometric evaluation in predicting the presence or absence of an OC pathology.
Methods
Ethical considerationThis study was reviewed and approved by the institutional review board B€ ulent Ecevit University.
ParticipantsThis retrospective study was conducted on 159 ears with CSOM who underwent surgery between December 2012 and January 2015. Both of the ears were evaluated in 12 patients. Diagnoses were rendered according to history of the patients, otomicroscopy, multislice computed tomography (CT) images and audiometry. Exclusion criteria were as follows: (i) ears with cholesteatoma, (ii) tympanic membrane retraction pocket (TMRP), (iii) revision cases, (iv) operations in which the middle ear was not explored, (v) ears with both OC discontinuity and immobility and (vi) craniofacial abnormalities.
