The impact of climate change on atopic dermatitis and mental health comorbidities: a review of the literature and examination of intersectionality

Abstract: Climate change, fueled by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases, is associated with rising temperatures, extreme weather events, increased aeroallergen production, and air pollution. Our understanding that many inflammatory cutaneous diseases carry important mental health comorbidities is expanding. Simultaneously, the detrimental impacts of climate change on human health are now widely recognized as a global public health crisis. Importantly, these climate‐associated phenomena exacerbate the environme… Show more

“…1 Due to its pruritic, eczematous, relapsing nature and association with several comorbidities, including food allergy, asthma and allergic rhinitis, the patients' quality of life, happiness and mental health are also affected. [1][2][3][4] Considering these aspects, AD was ranked as the skin disease with the highest disease burden in terms of disabilityadjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2017. 5 The aetiology of AD is multifactorial, ranging from genetic to socioeconomic and environmental factors.…”

“…These efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing 'Good Health and Well-Being' and 'Clean Water and Sanitation' for global development (Bozdağ, 2022;Lederman & Anders Whitney, 2022). Given the current global health challenges such as rising poverty, crime rates, mental health issues, and overloaded healthcare systems due to non-communicable diseases (Kam et al, 2023;Ramos et al, 2023;, the need to focus on improving access to spaces fostering community activities and wellbeing is paramount (Bozdağ, 2022;Lederman & Anders Whitney, 2022). In this context, the sustainable and effective design of the riverfront along the Klang River presents a significant opportunity to create activity spaces that bring joy to the community while also aligning with the UN SDGs' objectives in safeguarding Kuala Lumpur's urban community (Connolly, 2020).…”

“…3 The disease has a considerable influence on the economy as a global public health crisis. 2,4 The main primary hallmarks of the disease are neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques caused by intracellular tau protein hyperphosphorylation. 5 The amyloidogenic cascade and its peptide byproducts play a significant role in the start of AD.…”
