The impact of coal and non‐coal consumption on China's energy performance improvement

Abstract: China is the world's largest energy consumer, and coal accounts for a higher proportion of the country's total energy consumption, yet during its 12th five‐year plan (2011–2015), the coal share among total energy consumption significantly decreased. Previous studies exploring energy performance typically used energy consumption as an input, but this lacks the analytical capacity for the structure of energy consumption. Thus, this study splits energy input into two different inputs, coal consumption and non‐coa… Show more

“…[4][5][6] Coal emissions from China's primary energy consumption account for approximately 80% of the country's total emissions, with coal power units accounting for 50% or more of the coal consumption. 7,8 Coal power units serve as China's electric power safety measure, ensuring stable production of "ballast", and are its basic secure power supply. The depth of the peak power status is difficult to shake.…”

“…Coal resources have always been the basic energy supporting economic development in China. 1 In recent years, with the deepening of mining depth and the increasing complexity of coal mining, the deep coal seams have generally exhibited high ground stress, high gas content, and high gas pressure characteristics. Gas disasters have become one of the factors seriously affecting mine safety production.…”

“…Coal-fired power plants are still the main source of electricity in many countries worldwide and the generation is estimated to account for 46% of the global electricity supply by 2030 [1]. China is the largest consumer of coal in the world, and the coal consumption accounts for 56% of the country's total energy consumption in 2021 [2,3]. Meanwhile, considerable amounts of fly ash (FA) are generated from coal-burning power plants.…”
