The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on vascular registries and clinical trials

Abstract: Since January 2020 Elsevier has created a COVID-19 resource centre with free information in English and Mandarin on the novel coronavirus COVID-19. The COVID-19 resource centre is hosted on Elsevier Connect, the company's public news and information website. “…We have previously reported that practice volumes reached and at times exceeded pre-pandemic levels by fall of 2020. 3 In this analysis, non-elective rates (used to determine percent of elective to non-elective procedures) were not significantly different compared to historical values:(PVI pre-COVID=15.8%, PVI COVID=19.4%; EVAR pre-COVID=15.6%, EVAR COVID=15.6%, CEA pre-COVID=13.3%, CEA COVID=15.1%). This data suggests that practice patterns had resumed with a similar ratio of elective to non-elective case mix during the COVID time period, thus showing little restriction in performing elective procedures.…”

“…By August of 2020, both the VQI and Vascunet registries had achieved nearly 85% of pre-pandemic volumes. 3 Recognizing the need to better understand the pandemic’s impact on procedural volumes and outcomes, VQI added COVID variables to all procedure-based registries in September 2020. We sought to determine the mortality impact of coronavirus infection on VQI registries.…”

“…Our scoping review primarily reported and discussed the changes in VS practice during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic due to paucity of individual institutional data on VS practice during the later phases of the pandemic. 41 The sharp decline in VS cases during the first two quarters of 2020 is corroborated by registry data such as the United Kingdom National Vascular Registry and the United States Vascular Quality Initiative. However, by the third quarter of 2020, elective VS cases such as carotid endarterectomies and abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs had rebounded to near pre-pandemic volumes due to easing of COVID-19 restrictions.…”

“…The newer collaborative studies and pre-existing registries both play an important role in collecting and assimilating worldwide data pertaining to the effects of COVID-19 on vascular surgical practice. 41 …”
