The impact of decision-making styles (effectuation logic and causation logic) on firm performance: a meta-analysis

Abstract: Purpose As two essential styles of firm decision-making, the relationships among effectuation logic, causation logic and firm performance are unclear. It is helpful to deepen the understanding of reasoning theory and the process of decision-making. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between effectuation logic, causation logic and firm performance. “…Effectuation offers insights into the focal question of how entrepreneurial decision-making logic impacts small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) performance (Peng et al , 2020; Read et al , 2009; Zhang et al , 2022). Such work contributes substantially to international entrepreneurship (IE) and international marketing (IM) research, by addressing the uncertainty of internationalization (Johanson and Vahlne, 2009) and the successful presence of SMEs with limited resources in international markets (Galkina and Chetty, 2015; Sraha et al , 2020).…”

“…Admittedly, the impact of effectuation and causation on firm performance outcomes has been extensively studied in the literature (e.g. Zhang et al, 2023;Shirokova et al, 2020;Deligianni et al, 2017;Eyana et al, 2018;Smolka et al, 2018). Moreover, prior studies show that effectuation and causation can have a positive effect on SME performance in adverse economic conditions (e.g.…”

“…Meanwhile, bibliometric analysis as a quantitative review method minimizes selection bias in the sampling process, which is open and visible, and provides higher-level evidence based on visual reviews of completeness. Thus, it reduces the dependence on experimental time and scope limitations ( Tjak et al, 2015 ; Jin et al, 2021 ; Li, 2022 ; Zhang et al, 2022 ). Recently, bibliometric analysis has received increasing attention in various fields ( Rixe et al, 2016 ; Kokol et al, 2020 ; Wg et al, 2021 ; You et al, 2021 ; Zhang et al, 2022 ).…”
