The impact of design decisions on post occupancy processes in school buildings

Abstract: Purpose: This paper reviews the impact of design and specification decisions for major works during post-occupancy processes; the routine maintenance and management of school premises. It also explores the relationship between the main stakeholders and how this impacts decision making and the post occupancy operation of the school buildings.\ud Design/methodology/approach: In addition to literature review, qualitative data was also obtained through focus group; a steering group. The steering group consisted of… Show more

“…They will depend more on a combined analysis of critical success factors and key performance indicators that together create the best returns and of the highest quality for the core activities, which, in the case of schools, is teaching and learning. From a user perspective (Adeyeye et al , 2013), the quality criteria for a school building were defined by performance and functionality. More specifically, this means a building that suits its context is adequately sized and has functional spaces.…”

“…POE has been defined as "the process of evaluating buildings in a systematic and rigorous manner after they have been built and occupied for some time" [8]. POE is used to determine whether or not the building's performance requirements are being satisfied through the decisions made by the planners, designers, and facilities management professionals [9]. The findings of the POE provide practical benefits to a wide spectrum of stakeholders in the building project.…”
