The Impact of Digital Technology on Land Rent-Out Behavior: Information Sharing or Exclusion?

Abstract: In the digital age, it is critical to understand the nexus between digital technology (DT) and land rent-out behavior (LRB). It has implications for reducing the rate of land abandonment to achieve sustainable agricultural development. A large dataset (n = 5233) dating from 2016 and coming from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) is used to explore the impact of DT on LRB by applying several econometric models, also including the “Recursive Bivariate Probit (RBP) model” and “Chain Multiple Mediation effect (… Show more

“…Majority of countries seem to have prepared appropriate multi-level technological conditions so far for the younger generation, especially the centennials to be able to operate their inner tech-skills and benefit highly from technology (Proszek, 2019). Zuo and Hong's (2022) study confirm that although this generation is considered as natural technologists, such inventive individuals still need a guidance for the productive use of the Internet and digital tools towards perpetually evolving and growing telecommunications.…”

“…Digitalization is at the center in every field from lifestyle to production, from health to education especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic (Zuo & Hong, 2022). Generation Z was born into the technology that determines today's trends and they are well-aware of the fact that the path of future passes through digital conformation (Tsatsou, 2021).…”

“…In addition, in terms of research methods, Wang et al [4] used a novel hybrid model by integrating the Fuzzy set, Delphi, and the Grey theory, among others, to calculate the relationship between various factors in agricultural green supply chain management so as to grasp the relationship and key factors between each link, promote the reform of supply chain management, and promote agricultural sustainability. Based on the data gathered in 2016, from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) and from a variety of econometric models, Wang et al [5] clarify that digital technology can promote land circulation (land leasing behavior), integrate fragmented land, reduce land abandonment, and achieve sustainable livelihoods for farmers.…”

“…The third is the effect of e-commerce on agricultural production [17,18], which remains controversial. Some scholars believe that e-commerce promotes agricultural production by enhancing the market participation of agricultural products and optimizing production strategies [19]; however, others believe that e-commerce squeezes the space available to agricultural production by creating more non-agricultural job opportunities [20].…”

“…Historically, China is an agriculture-dominated country, with its average rural households possessing only 0.38 hectares of farmland, which is below the global average level [25]. This makes it a typical country with a significant contradiction between its population and the available land resources [19]. In order to ultimately achieve food security, rural development, and prosperity for farmers, China implemented the e-commerce demonstration county policy in 2014.…”
