Digitalization gives people access to a vast network of untapped data, which has the potential to help society and the environment. Smart systems connected to the internet can systematically provide a unique opportunity to solve difficulties related to long-term sustainability. The goals are to create an egalitarian, ecologically sustainable, and healthy society. Technological resources are envisioned as game-changing instruments. Three key concerns integration benefits are highlighted here: (i) sustainable development goals, (ii) socio-economic development, and (iii) the role of digital technology in environmental sustainability. This viewpoint describes the potential that digitization can create a future sustainable society. The technological network would unite the urban and rural worlds under a shared banner of sustainable development, keeping all social elements in the loop. Nations that take a comprehensive strategy will be able to provide equitable growth and an efficient, sustainable, and digital existence for their citizens. As a result, digitization provides better living conditions, active public involvement, clean governance, and transparency in public welfare programs and processes. People who are well-informed, self-aware, and digitally equipped will be better learners, thinkers, reformers, participators, and change and growth agents, marching forward on sustainable progress. The advantages of digitization in hastening the transition to sustainable industrial processes and improving people’s health and happiness are explored. Finally, the perspective encapsulates the advantages of digitization by offering a holistic vision of how technology could aid in addressing major challenges such as endangered world biodiversity and climate change.

PurposeThe authors aimed to examine how the level of digitalization in Poland and Ukraine affects the contribution of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the countries’ gross domestic product (GDP).Design/methodology/approachThe study involved a comparative analysis and statistical modeling of the impact of key economic factors on the contribution of SMEs to Poland’s and Ukraine’s GDP in the 2010–2020 period. The authors used principles of the theory of economic growth and calculated the coefficient of digital competitiveness as a composite indicator consisting of a number of global indices.FindingsThe study revealed significant differences between both countries, which can be attributed to a higher level of digitalization in Polish SMEs. The authors used the Polish experience to recommend how to reform Ukraine’s digital economy in postwar recovery.Originality/valueThe contribution of SMEs to Poland’s GDP is higher than that of Ukraine’s because of the higher entrepreneurship rate in the Polish micro and small enterprises (MSEs) sector. The authors found that a unit change in the integrated coefficient of digital competitiveness is related to the greatest change in the contribution of SMEs to the country’s GDP when the other factors in the model equation remain fixed.

This study develops an economic development index, a social development index, an environmental sustainability index, and an information and communication technology index to explore the comparison of 34 countries in global sustainable development (GSD) and its promoting indicators, and digitalization. The composite Z-score method is used to create the above-mentioned indexes between 2000 - 2021. The statistical values of these indexes are used to explicate the performance of these countries in all components of sustainable development and digitalization. The correlation coefficients among the mentioned indicators are also estimated to measure associations among them. The regression coefficients of explanatory variables with GSD and digitalization are also estimated using a log-linear regression model. There is reported a high diversity in digitalization, economic development (ED), social development (SD), environmental sustainability (ES), and GSD across countries. GSD is not possible without ED, SD, and ES. Digitalization has a positive impact on sustainable, social, and economic development. Digital technology helps to increase GSD, while GSD seems favorable to increasing digitalization. Digitalization improves as ED, SD, and GSD increase. While digitalization has a negative impact on ES. Green innovation, green and appropriate technologies, green entrepreneurship, and technological advancement would be supportive to increase digitalization and GSD.
