The impact of drought on human capital in rural India

Abstract: We study the impact of a severe drought on children's educational outcomes in rural Maharashtra, a state in central India. “…In the developing world specifically, limited savings among less wealthy households and the lack of social supports such as access to credit and insurance make it difficult for poorer families to recover from shocks caused by extreme weather (Groppo & Kraehnert, 2017 ; Marchetta et al, 2018 ). Parents are forced to shift their investments from their children’s schooling, e.g., uniforms, books, transportation, tuition (Joshi, 2019 ), instead directing their resources to recovery from the economic consequences of the typhoon’s damage (Deuchert & Felfe, 2015 ). Post-typhoon enrollment decreases.…”

“…Analysis of causes and effects of meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural drought in the area identified three clear stages: before 1997 being sustainable, 1997-2006 being transitional, and after 2006 being unsustainable.Water 2020, 12, 838 2 of 27 regions, but droughts are an unexpected reduction in rain over a certain time, affecting a region [3]. As the changes in rainfall volume are extreme, droughts are a major challenge, especially in rural areas [4][5][6]. Drought has a critical impact on water resource-dependent sectors, such as agriculture, raising concerns about the capacity to meet water and food demands [7].Drought is classified into four types-meteorological, hydrological, agricultural, and ocioeconomic [8][9][10].…”
