The impact of e‐commerce city pilot on the spatial agglomeration of high‐end service industry in China

Abstract: We employ the data of 290 cities in China from 2006 to 2019 as a research sample and use the Multi‐period DID method to test the policy shock of National E‐commerce Demonstration Cities (NEDC) pilots on high‐end service industry agglomeration. We find that after becoming pilot cities, the specialized agglomeration level of its high‐end service industry increases by about 14.1% on average, and the diversified agglomeration level decreases by about 2.7% on average. And NEDC policy can affect the spatial agglomer… Show more

“…Residents' demand for public transport will lead to low-carbon-emission energy consumption, that is, new energy and high-efficiency fossil energy consumption [26]. In addition, public transport is dominated by passenger service, which is conducive to the development of service enterprises with strong mobility or dependence on labor factors [42]. Compared with secondary industry with strong dependence on energy and resources, tertiary industry benefits more easily from public transport.…”

“…In addition, as a mode of transportation, public transport can reduce the transportation cost of enterprises, improve the accessibility between regions, reduce the distance between cities, and accelerate the flow of production and resources between regions [41]. Public transport is dominated by passenger service, which is conducive to the development of service enterprises with strong mobility or dependence on labor factors [42]. Therefore, compared with secondary industry with strong dependence on energy and resources, tertiary industry benefits more easily from public transport.…”

“…Ahlfeldt and Feddersen (2018) show that an HSR opening affects the transportation cost of elements in cities along the route, which can cause industries to cluster in central areas [52]. Xuan et al (2019) find that an HSR opening can promote the diversified aggregation of high-end service industries in the region, but this effect is not obvious in terms of the specialized agglomeration [53].…”
