The impact of environmental noise generated from ports: outcome of MESP project

Abstract: Ports are characterized by several complex operations. Accordingly, the analysis of noise results is complicated due to the presence in the same area of diverse sound from ships, trade and also from industrial and shipyards activities as well as auxiliary services producing negative effects on natural ecosystem and the urban population. The ENPI CBC MED project Managing the Environmental Sustainability of Ports for a durable development (MESP) addressed the pollution reduction from port activities through the … Show more

“…Although ports are the backbone to the global economy; increased shipping through ports, new port infrastructure development projects and functional activities at ports can be associated with adverse environmental and social impacts on coastal locations and neighboring communities [2, [45][46][47]. Consequently, stricter environmental legislations as well as social and environmental performance standards and requirements have emerged from various quarters in recent years [48][49][50].…”

“…Thus, with increasing port size and ship movements, inhabited areas could come near to industrial and operative port areas, leading to possible health issue and citizens' complaints, as reported in Athens [37] and Dublin [38]. For this reason, European projects like HADA [39], Eco.Port [40], NoMEPorts [41], SIMPYC [42], EcoPorts [43], MESP [44], and the on-going Interreg Maritime projects REPORT, RUMBLE and MON ACUMEN [45], have shed a bit of light on port noise in the very recent years. Mostly, all of them were focused on defining guidelines and assessing the problem on the END basis, while the Neptunes project [46] is studying noise produced by ships at berth.…”

“…The recent flourishing of European projects such as HADA [15], EcoPort [16], NoMEPorts [17], SIMPYC [18], MESP [19], and Anchor [20], give evidence of a keen interest in the theme, despite the small number of scientific papers on port noise and the absence of a complete understanding and description of the phenomena involved.…”
