The impact of exercise training on calf pump function, muscle strength, ankle range of motion, and health-related quality of life in patients with chronic venous insufficiency at different stages of severity: a systematic review

Abstract: Exercise training (ET) is an important tool in the management of patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). The objective of this article was to discuss the effects of ET on the calf pump, functional parameters, and quality of life of patients with mild and advanced CVI. A systematic review was conducted and eleven studies were included. In patients with mild CVI, ET was effective for improving venous reflux, muscle strength, ankle range of motion, and quality of life. In advanced CVI patients, ET incre… Show more

“…Considering that ROM impairment is one of the barriers in the treatment of venous leg ulcers, physical training aimed at increasing ankle ROM in patients with CVD is required. A recent systematic review 31 demonstrated significant improvements in ankle ROM after physical training both in patients with mild and with severe CVD. Impairments in the muscle strength of the dorsi and plantar flexors were also investigated.…”

“…Finally, according to a recent review, 33 the rehabilitation of patients with CVD must be tailored by the stage of disease severity. Although many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of exercise-based intervention in patients with CVD, 8,31,34,35 the specific goal of treatment at each stage of the disease remained unknown. Therefore, the present study recommends the preventive adoption of muscle strengthening exercises and increased gait speed from the early stages of the disease.…”

“…13 Many studies have addressed assessment of HRQoL in this population and also the effect of interventions on HRQoL. [14][15][16] However, assessment of HRQoL in patients with CVI is complex, since its clinical expression ranges from esthetic factors to functional components. 17 There is therefore a need to critically discuss the psychometric properties, i.e., reliability, validity, and responsiveness, of the specific questionnaires available to ensure proper use.…”
