The impact of high-speed railway on tourism spatial structures between two adjoining metropolitan cities in China: Beijing and Tianjin

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThis study examines the impact of HSR services on the tourism spatial interactions between Beijing and Tianjin in China. Data were collected from official statistical reports. A method of derivation was developed and several indexes, such as tourism mean center, and tourism standard distance are further applied to measure temporalspatial changes between the two adjoining cities. The results reveal the dynamic tourism spatial interaction between Beijing and Tianjin has been influenced by a range … Show more

“…Most research into spatial and temporal tourism flow has focused on the "tourists-excursion-scenic spot" pattern. Some interrelated studies have focused on the spatial patterns [17][18][19], spatio-temporal evolution [20][21][22][23], and influencing factors [24,25] of tourism flow and the demand for tourism [26,27]. Such research has significantly helped to clarify the concept of tourism flow, constructing the research directions and paradigm for tourism flow.…”

“…At the same time, through advanced technologies such as information technology, GIS, GPS, social media, and big data, spatial-temporal analysis (STA) has been conducted to solve the problems of overtourism and sustainable tourism planning in urban tourism, and thereby foster urban smart tourism development [65,66] Urban agglomeration tourism stresses the importance of interconnectivity and integration. Urban agglomeration strives to break through the administrative boundaries, guide the rational planning of resources, build a tourism network [67], bring about agglomeration development of the tourism industry [68,69], promote inter-city spatial relations [6,70] and advance competition and cooperation relations among key destination actors [71]. Research on regional tourism spatial networks has also become thematic.…”

“…From 1997 to 2007, railways in China experienced six speed increases, and the average speed increased from 48.1 km/h to 70.18 km/h [23]; in 2008, the first High-Speed Railway from Beijing to Tianjin with the designed speed of 350 km/h was opened [24]; in 2006, the first maglev line in China was opened, with a running speed of 430 km/h [25]. Railways have achieved leapfrog breakthroughs in both mileage and operation speed.…”
