The Impact of Knowledge-Based Economy on Growth Performance: Evidence from MENA Countries

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine the empirical relationship between the knowledge-based economy and economic growth in MENA countries. We are interested in identifying pillars linked with the transition to a knowledge-based economy that is related to growth performance. We used a growth model in Barro and Sala-i-Martin framework (1995) for the period of 2010-2015. It includes a panel data set that consisted the annual economic growth rate for selected MENA countries and, within the theoretical and empirical… Show more

“…It is very common to find terms such as "knowledge society" and "knowledge-based economy" in the literature. The review of the scientific literature shows that many authors emphasize the importance of the knowledge-based economy focused on national competitiveness in the international market (Peters, 2001;Barkhordari at al., 2019;Cristiano Miles & Boden, 2019;O'Donovan, 2020). The "knowledge economy" or "knowledge-based economy" is defined in the national policies of many countries: Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, the United States, the countries of Southeast Asia and China, and they all point out that the knowledge-based economy is an important policy with implications in different organisations where it increases production and employment.…”

“…Considering the prior literature, the objective of this work is to evaluate the joint influence of the three dimensions of Hershey et al (2013) -capacity, disposition and opportunity, through a structural equation model (SEM) aimed at analysing what variables of personal financial planning in Spain could be determining personal financial management, and its relationship with resources available for retirement. According to the knowledge-based economy approach (Barkhordari et al, 2019;Heikka & Carayannis, 2019), the predictive capacity of the proposed model could facilitate retirement personal planning, allowing to individuals the consideration of adjustments (capability overestimations, task procrastinations, retirement age, etc). The improvement could be obtained by promoting the management of complementary resources to the funds received from the public pension system, by helping individuals to have more complete information on their own retirement intentions and financial management capability.…”
