Objective Sleep affects the development and severity of psychiatric symptoms in children, and maternal personality traits may influence children’s sleep. We aimed to confirm the longitudinal effect of maternal personality traits on children’s sleep disturbance using cohort data from the Panel Study on Korean Children. Methods Maternal personality traits were assessed using the Personality Assessment Inventory in 2009, and the sleep disturbance of children was assessed using parent survey data from 2010 to 2014 (2nd−6th waves). Among the 11 clinical scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory, the 5 scales that showed the most significant correlations were analyzed. Presence or absence of child sleep disturbance was evaluated with a chi-square test, and the effect of the Personality Assessment Inventory was assessed by a binary logistic regression analysis with child sleep disturbance as the dependent variable. Results Of the 171 mother-child dyads, 92 were classified into the sleep disturbance group and 79 were classified into the normal sleep group. Maternal somatic concerns showed a significant relationship with children’s sleep disturbance at years 2 and 3. Maternal borderline features demonstrated a significant relationship with children’s sleep disturbance from years 2 to 5. The binary logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between high borderline features and children’s sleep disturbance at years 2 and 3. Conclusion High maternal borderline features evaluated at child age 1 were related to sleep disturbance in early childhood. In assessing a children’s sleep problems, it may be important to examine mothers’ dysfunctional personality traits.

Bu araştırmada, 2000-2020 yılları arasında okul öncesi eğitimi ile çocuk gelişimi ve eğitimi anabilim dallarında yapılan "problem davranış" konulu lisansüstü tezlerin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Belirlenen kriterlere göre Yükseköğretim Kurumu (YÖK) Ulusal Tez Merkezinde 56'sı yüksek lisans ve 8'i doktora tezi olmak üzere toplam 64 adet tez tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma, araştırmanın amacına uygun olarak durum çalışması desenine göre yürütülmüş, veriler dokumanlar incelenerek toplanmış, verilerin analizinde betimsel analiz ve içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Problem davranış konulu lisansüstü tezlerin 44'ünün okul öncesi bilim dalında, 20'sinin çocuk gelişimi ve eğitimi bilim dalında yapıldığı görülmüştür. Tezlerin %86'sının 2010 yılı ve sonraki yıllarda yapıldığı belirlenmiştir (n=55). Genel olarak lisansüstü tezlerde en fazla çocukların bireysel özellikleri (sosyal beceri, öz düzenleme, sosyal duygusal gelişim, iletişim, empati, bilişsel beceriler, mizaç vb.) ile problem davranışları arasındaki ilişki ele alınmıştır. Ayrıca aile (ebeveyn tutumları, ilgileri disiplin yöntemleri vb), öğretmen (davranış yönetimi, iletişim, uyum vb.) ve akran değişkenleri ile problem davranışlar arasındaki ilişkiler belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Son olarak 3 farklı eğitim programının ve oyun terapisinin çocuklarının problem davranışları üzerinde etkisi incelenmiş, bu programların ve terapinin çocukların problem davranışlarını azalttığı görülmüştür. Lisansüstü tezlerin %62.5'inde (40) çocukların problem davranışları cinsiyetlerine göre karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu tezlerin %77.5'inde (31) erkek çocukların problem davranışları kızlara göre daha fazla sergilediği rapor edilmiştir.

Background The influence of maternal temperament on child behavior, and whether maternal temperament impact boys and girls differently is not thoroughly studied. The aim was to investigate the impact of maternal temperament and character on child externalizing and internalizing problems at age 3. Methods A birth-cohort of 1723 mothers and their children were followed from birth to age 3. At the child’s age of 3 months, the mothers filled out standardized instruments on their temperament and character using the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and depressive symptoms using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). At the child’s age of 3 years, the mothers reported on child behavior using the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). Results Maternal temperamental trait novelty seeking was positively associated with externalizing problems in the total population and in girls. Harm avoidance was positively associated with externalizing problems in the total population and in boys, and with internalizing problems in the total population and boys and girls respectively. Maternal character traits of self-directedness and cooperativeness were negatively associated with both externalizing and internalizing problems in the total population and in boys and girls respectively. Conclusions Maternal character traits were more influential on child behavior than were temperamental traits, and thus the opportunities for intervention targeted at parental support are good. Maternal mental health and socioeconomic aspects also increased the risk for child behavior problems, indicating the need for recognition and support in clinical settings.
