Planning is an important tool to translate intentions into physical activity (PA) behavior. Affective and bodily states are known to influence how much PA individuals perform, but their impact on to formulation of PA plans is not yet known. The aim of the current study is to explore the effect of within‐ and between‐subject variations in affective and bodily states on the content of PA goals and plans. Over eight consecutive days, 362 students created action and coping plans to achieve their daily PA goals. They also reported their affective and bodily states. Generalized linear mixed effect models were used to analyze the associations between these states and the content of the goals and plans. The results showed that both between‐ and within‐subject variations in affective and bodily states were associated with goals formulated in terms of minutes, the intensity and context of planned activities, and anticipated barriers, though more effects were found for within‐subject differences. Affective and bodily states impact daily PA goals and plans, highlighting the dynamic nature of planning. Our findings can be a first step toward personalized suggestions for goals, action plans, and coping strategies that are based on individual affective and bodily states.

Towards more personalized digital health interventions: impact of emotions and physical complaints on goals, action and coping plans to promote physical activity

Background. Despite effectiveness of action and coping planning in digital health interventions to promote physical activity (PA), attrition rates remain high. Indeed, support to make plans is often abstract and generic. Nevertheless, people are different, and context varies. Tailored support involving personalized suggestions of specific plans, may be one way to help. As a first step, we designed a study to identify whether dynamic user information (i.e. emotions, physical complaints) relates toward goals, specific action plans (APs) and coping plans (CPs). Methods. Each morning for eight consecutive days, students (n = 362) were instructed to create APs and CPs to reach their PA goal and answered questions regarding emotions and physical complaints. To examine associations between emotions, physical complaints and content of the created goals, APs and CPs, generalized linear mixed effect models were fitted using the lme4-package in R. Results. Between- and within-individual variations in emotions and physical complaints influenced the content of goals. When experiencing more positive emotions, a higher goal in terms of minutes PA was set (within: P < .001, between: P = .023). If participants had more negative emotions, were more fatigued and experienced more pain, a lower goal in terms of minutes PA was set (within: P < .001; within: P < .001; within: P = .025 respectively). Between- and within-individual variations in positive emotions, fatigue and pain also influenced the content of APs and barriers of CPs. When experiencing more positive emotions, activities outside (within: P = .016, between: P = .011), not at home (within: P = .013, between: P = .007) and with someone else were preferred (within: P < .001, between: P < .001), whereas if participants were more fatigued, they preferred doing activities alone (within: P = .006), and if participants experienced more pain, they preferred light-to-moderate instead of high intensity activities (within: P = .024). Lastly, when participants had more positive emotions, they reported more external barriers (within: P = .004, between: P = .003) whereas when participants were more fatigued and experienced more pain, they reported more internal barriers (within: P = .010, between: P < .001; within: P < .001 respectively). Conclusions. This study reveals associations between emotions, physical complaints and the content of goals, APs and CPs participants set. Consequently, the knowledge acquired from these findings might be used to ultimately personalize suggestions of goals, APs and CPs in a more dynamic manner. However, further validation and refinement with experts and experimental designs are needed.

Background The interplay of physical activity (PA) with affective well-being (AWB) is highly critical to both health behaviors and health outcomes. Current prominent theories presume AWB to be crucial for PA maintenance, and PA is evidenced to foster mental health. However, thus far, PA-AWB associations have mainly been researched in laboratory settings and with interventional designs, but the everyday life perspective had not been focused on, mostly due to technological limitations. In the course of digitization, the number of studies using device-based methods to research the within-subject association of physical activity and affective well-being (PA-AWB) under ecological valid conditions increased rapidly, but a recent comprehensive systematic review of evidence across populations, age groups, and distinct AWB components remained inconclusive. Objectives Therefore, we aimed to firstly review daily-life studies that assessed intensive longitudinal device-based (e.g., electronic smartphone diaries and accelerometry) and real-time PA-AWB data, secondly to develop and apply a quality assessment tool applicable to those studies, and thirdly to discuss findings and draw implications for research and practice. Methods To this end, the literature was searched in three databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus) up to November 2022. The systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines and had been pre-registered (PROSPERO id: CRD42021277327). A modified quality assessment tool was developed to illustrate the risk of bias of included studies. Results The review of findings showed that, in general, already short PA bouts in everyday life, which clearly differ from structured exercise sessions, are positively associated with AWB. In particular, feelings of energy relate to incidental (non-exercise and unstructured) activity, and PA-AWB associations depend on population characteristics. The quality assessment revealed overall moderate study quality; however, the methods applied were largely heterogeneous between investigations. Overall, the reviewed evidence on PA-AWB associations in everyday life is ambiguous; for example, no clear patterns of directions and strengths of PA-AWB relationships depending on PA and AWB components (such as intensity, emotions, affect, mood) emerged. Conclusions The reviewed evidence can fuel discussions on whether the World Health Organization’s notion “every move counts” may be extended to everyday life AWB. Concurrently, the PA-AWB relationship findings endorse prominent theories highlighting the critical role of AWB in everyday PA engagement and maintenance. However, the review also clearly highlights the need to advance and harmonize methodological approaches for more fine-grained investigations on which specific PA/AWB characteristics, contextual factors, and biological determinants underly PA-AWB associations in everyday life. This will enable the field to tackle pressing challenges such as the issue of causality of PA-AWB associations, which will help to shape and refine existing theories to ultimately predict and improve health behavior, thereby feeding into precision medicine approaches.
