The impact of mentoring during postgraduate training on doctors’ career success

Abstract: This study confirmed the positive impact of mentoring on career success in a cohort of Swiss doctors in a longitudinal design. However, female doctors, who are mentored less frequently than male doctors, appear to be disadvantaged in this respect. Formal mentoring programmes could reduce barriers to mentorship and promote the career advancement of female doctors in particular.

“…Doing so will ultimately further the goal of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) to have more residency-trained pharmacists, 4 especially since the demand for hospital residency positions in Canada has been increasing. 5 A literature search of the MEDLINE, PubMed, and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts databases, in July 2010, yielded publications demonstrating that preceptorship is an effective method of teaching in medicine, nursing, and veterinary medicine, in addition to pharmacy, 2,[6][7][8][9][10][11] and supporting the implementation of training programs for preceptors in these fields.…”

“…Freilich and his group have found that mentoring was the 2nd more common factor influencing postgraduate doctors to choose urolgy as residency/career [6]. Stamm in his study has confirmed the positive impact of mentoring on career success in a cohort of Swiss doctors in a longitudinal design [7]. In our study there has been no better agreement about the importance of mentorship in our residency program (Figure 2).…”
