Heterogeneity analysis in carbonate reservoirs is of great importance for the interpretation of their characteristics. This study focuses on the evaluation of pore‐type heterogeneity by means of the sonic wave velocities in the carbonate–evaporite series of Permian–Triassic sequences in the Persian Gulf. Thin section petrography and laboratory measured the porosity and permeability of 1576 samples, as well as routine wire‐line logs, were employed. To manage heterogeneity, six electrofacies (EF) were determined based on an integrated analysis of compressional, shear and Stoneley waves as well as three routine logs (gamma, neutron and density). The frequency of pore types in each electrofacies was calculated. Then, the heterogeneity of pore‐type distribution in each electrofacies was measured by standard error and coefficient of variation. Sonic velocity has been compared with the geological properties of electrofacies. Results indicated that velocity is affected by factors other than the amount of porosity, facies or lithology. The standard error values in all electrofacies were close to zero. The coefficient of variation values ranges from 1.08 to 4.60. The lowest amount of coefficient of variation was observed in EF6 in the Khuff (K) 4 zone for moldic porosity. This value for intercrystalline porosity distribution in EF1 in the K1 zone was low, too. These results indicate the lowest standard deviation and the highest homogeneity in the distribution of intercrystalline and moldic porosities in K1 and K4. Also, comparing the mean values of sonic logs in each electrofacies with the total mean value in the whole sequence indicated that there is a relationship between sonic velocity logs and the type of porosity. High values of sonic velocity correspond to intercrystalline porosity in K1 and low values of velocity correspond to moldic porosity in K4. Results show that integrated pore‐type studies should be carried out to understand the sonic velocities in carbonate reservoir rocks.

The Upper Arab reservoir in the central Persian Gulf was examined for depositional, diagenetic, sequence stratigraphic and petrophysical features. This succession is composed of eight sedimentary facies that deposited on a carbonate ramp. Three-third-order sequences prograded across the Late Jurassic Arab Platform. This interval was complicated by multiple diagenetic phases including eogenesis and mesogenesis that strongly influenced reservoir properties. Dolomitization, dissolution, cementation and compaction are major diagenetic processes which played an essential role in increasing or decreasing reservoir quality. Four hydraulic flow units (HFU) were determined by flow zone indicator approach for evaluation of the reservoir quality. In addition to depositional features, diagenetic alterations have changed general HFUs characterizations such as porosity, permeability and pore-throat size. Likewise, via Lucia classification, HFUs of the Arab reservoir were grouped based on the integration of geological and petrophysical attributes in detail. Among diagenetic processes, dolomitization and dissolution have positive effects while cementation and stylolitization have a negative effect on HFUs characteristics in the studied reservoir. Put another way, since diagenetic alterations lead to the intensification of heterogeneity in carbonate reservoir, prediction of the relationship between pore type and pore throat size is a problematic issue. Recognition of the hydraulic flow units considered as a practical tool for grouping reservoir rocks and characterizing heterogeneity using porosity and permeability relationship. Finally, specifying of the contribution of various diagenetic imprints in each hydraulic flow unit in a sequence stratigraphic framework results in a conceptual reservoir model that could predict reservoir quality variations across the field.

A set of marine carbonates was deposited in the Palaeozoic of the North China Craton, which is the dominant sequence for buried hill hydrocarbon exploration. This study focuses on the lithofacies and reservoirs developed in the sequence. Based on the data of cores, thin sections, drilling, and logging, the characteristics of the sequence stratigraphic framework and its control on lithofacies and reservoirs of the Lower Palaeozoic buried hills in the offshore Bohai Bay Basin are discussed.The results show that there developed 4 second-order sequences and 21 third-order sequences in the study area. Due to the deep burial depth, the dolomite is more likely to form high-quality reservoirs than limestone in the study area, and we define the dolomitic tidal flat-dominant sequences as 'favorable reservoir sequences'. There developed unconformity-related reservoirs and inner reservoirs in the buried hill, and the 'favourable reservoir sequences' present obvious control on both reservoirs, showing: (i) 'favourable reservoir sequences' and weathering interface control on the scale of the unconformity-related reservoir jointly, and (ii) the inner reservoirs developed within 'favourable reservoir sequences' as well, and the top and bottom of the high-frequency sequences are the predominant areas for the bedding karst reservoir distribution.
