The impact of nutritional choices on global warming and policy implications: examining the link between dietary choices and greenhouse gas emissions

Abstract: Research over the past 10 years has illustrated an important connection between dietary choices, the food systems required to produce them, and the subsequent impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Several recent studies have used data on the GHG contribution of different food types to model the impact of different dietary patterns on GHG emissions; these studies have most commonly compared the average diet for a particular country to healthier dietary options and vegetarian options. We present a systematic… Show more

“…This review is the most recent and comprehensive to date, and the first to compare impacts across GHG emissions, land use, and water use. This work supports the conclusions of previous reviews in this area[14, 15] which also pointed to the potential for reductions in GHG emissions and land use from dietary change. However, our review substantially expands the number of studies and dietary patterns assessed, and includes grey literature.…”

“…Our analysis aims to substantially expand on two previous reviews [14, 15], as a large number of studies in this area have been published since then, and we also include grey literature, and the additional indicators of water use and health impacts.…”

“…We included only studies for which quantitative data on GHGE and dietary nutritional content or health outcomes were available. We searched the reference lists of the three previously published reviews on this topic (11)(12)(13) . We also searched the citations of these articles using Google Scholar.…”

“…Furthermore, the application of a 'carbon tax' on food commodities and the consequent shifting from animal-based to plant-based diets, a part from the related environmental benefits (Tukker et al, 2011;Wirsenius et al, 2011), would also positively affect the consumer health, as envisaged by Springmann et al (2016) and Joyce et al (2014).…”
