The Impact of Pain Assessment on Critically Ill Patients’ Outcomes: A Systematic Review

Abstract: In critically ill patients, pain is a major problem. Efficient pain management depends on a systematic, comprehensive assessment of pain. We aimed to review and synthesize current evidence on the impact of a systematic approach to pain assessment on critically ill patients' outcomes. A systematic review of published studies (CINAHL, PUBMED, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and COCHRANE databases) with predetermined eligibility criteria was undertaken. Methodological quality was assessed by the EPHPP quality assessment tool. A … Show more

“…Severe pain negatively affects patient status (e.g., cardiac instability, respiratory compromise, immunosuppression) in critically ill adults; implementation of assessment-driven and standardized pain management protocols improves ICU outcomes and clinical practice (5,20). Carefully titrated analgesic dosing is important when balancing the benefits versus potential risks of opioid exposure (21)(22)(23)(24)(25). In this guideline section, we address three actionable questions and two descriptive questions related to the pain experience of critically ill adults (see prioritized topic list in Supplemental…”

“…Analog Scale of Numerical Pain: It consisted of a numbered horizontal line, 0-10, with the ends indicating "no pain" and "worst possible pain" (Georgiou et al, 2015;Brasil, 2002). The volunteers were instructed to rate the pain within the existing scale value, according to the intensity of their sensation.…”

“…The maintenance of patient comfort aims is to be achieved by initially integrating all of these elements of patient care through analgesia and light sedation (Vincent et al, 2016). Only through regular assessment and evaluation, pain treatment and sedation in ICU patients are safely cared for, with delirium recognised at an early stage (Georgiou, Hadjibalassi, Lambrinou, Andreou, & Papathanassoglou, 2015;Mehta, Spies, & Shehabi, 2017;Wøien, Vaerøy, Aamodt, & Bjørk, 2014).…”
