The impact of Pain-related emotions on migraine

Abstract: The response to pain is highly individual and can be influenced by complex emotional perception. This study aims to investigate the status of the pain-related emotional response, and the influence on headache characteristics and disability in migraine. We studied the pain-related emotional response in 145 consecutive migraine patients using the Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS), the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ) and compared them with 106 healthy controls. We i… Show more

“…22 In contrast, the results of a study carried out in Taif, KSA, showed that nausea was the most common manifestation experienced before, during, and after migraine attacks. 23 The most common triggering factors for migraine headaches were sleep deprivation, stress and anxiety, which were supported by a previous study conducted in Aseer, KSA, in which lack of sleep triggered migraine in 84.1% of the patients and anxiety in 73.2%. 11 This study has noted that migraine headaches were more prevalent among students (43.3%), and the prevalence was exceptionally high among people with bachelor's degrees (62.1%), which demonstrated an association between high levels of education and increased prevalence of migraine headaches.…”

“…In addition, we found that PCS and CHPASS scores correlated negatively with the current intensity, suggesting that higher levels of pain-related emotions and cognition render subjects more sensitive to pain, reducing the current intensity required to achieve the same pain score. The effects of pain-related catastrophic thinking and anxiety on pain sensitivity have been demonstrated in many studies (Failla et al, 2020;Grouper et al, 2021;Kim et al, 2021). Taken together, the significant correlations observed in this study between the current intensity and the PSE and PCS and CHPASS scores suggest that the impacts of pain-related cognitive, emotional, and sensory factors on time perception may be direct and/or indirect.…”

“…Together, these results highlight the importance of developing standardized, validated measures to capture a fuller picture of the impact of migraine on patients’ lives. Pain‐related anxiety significantly impacts disability, 43 and many of the questionnaires assessing such impact (e.g., Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale and Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire) were developed to assess patients with chronic pain, but many items are not appropriate for those with migraine. Additional measures, such as the recently developed Impact of Migraine on Partners and Adolescent Children, IMPAC scale, 8 are needed to fully identify and track the full scope of the impact of migraine.…”
