The impact of physical activity on cumulative cardiovascular disease risk factors among Malaysian adults

Abstract: BackgroundNumerous studies have shown the importance of physical activity in reducing the morbidity and mortality rates caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, most of these studies emphasise little on the cumulative effect of CVD risk factors. Hence, this study investigates the association between physical exercise and cumulative CVD risk factors among adults in three different age groups.MethodsUsing a sample of 7276 respondents drawn from community centers, the REDISCOVER team gathered information … Show more

“…Physical activity is generally considered to be a health promoting behaviour as it is associated with reduced risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancers [ 3 , 4 ]. A number of epidemiological studies have focused on the effects of physical activity on fertility, but no consensus has been reached until now [ 5 7 ].…”

“…14,16 Physical activity (PA) is associated with reduced cumulative cardiovascular risk, and those who engage in PA are less likely to have CVD as compared with those who are physically inactive. 17,18 Currently, physical inactivity (6%) is ranked the fourth leading global risk factor for mortality and prevalence is increasing among adult populations in developing countries, particularly among urban residents and women. 19 The global progress in the prevention of CVD is suboptimal in developing countries.…”
